This Week’s Spotlight and Project-Inspiration Theme: Veterans Day

This week’s focus is Veterans Day!

November 11th is Veterans Day and this week’s theme! It is a national holiday in the United States that honors all military veterans who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. The day is focused on paying respect to veterans and the sacrifices they have made for our country. It is a federal holiday and therefore many workers and students receive Veterans Day off.

Veterans Day falls on the same day as two other holidays, Armistice Day and Remembrance Day, both of which are to commemorate the ending of the First World War. It is celebrated on the 11th of November because on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918 Germany was forced into an armistice ending World War I. In 1954 the holiday officially switched to Veterans Day in order to honor all veterans from all wars.

This Veteran’s Day, take a moment to consider our nation’s Veterans who are looking for new careers once they leave service. This Fast Company article describes just some of the reasons that Veterans make great candidates for positions at tech companies.

We hope that you create something to celebrate Veterans Day, try using this tutorial to draw an American flag using Python. Whatever you create, don't forget to share it with us!
