This Week’s Spotlight and Project-Inspiration Theme: National Honey Bee Day

This week’s focus is National Honey Bee Day!

August 21st is National Honey Bee Day and this week's theme! We want to take this week to celebrate the honey bees and recognize how important their everyday contributions are to society. The day also brings awareness to beekeeping and the growing environmental impacts on the honey bee.

Honey bees are responsible for one-third of crop pollination and produce $30 billion a year in crop production. They are responsible for most of our food production, and the continuation of high death rates of honey bees could create a lasting impact this. They don't just pollinate our food but also pollinate wild and native plants as well. Because of this, it is so important for us to see how we can lower our impact, ensuring the best future for everyone.

Some simple things that you can do at home to help start saving the honey bees are planting a bee garden, creating a bee pond, or buying local/organic produce. You could also learn more about beekeeping and try to start a hive in your own community. To learn more about saving the bee's check out the Bee Conservatory website.

As you are practicing your coding skills this week, could you try creating a Scratch project to help educate people on what simple things they can do in the community to save the bees or practice your coding skills by using this tutorial to create a bee-themed game? Whatever you create, don't forget to share it with us!
