This Week’s Spotlight and Project-Inspiration Theme: 2021 Tokyo Olympics

This week’s focus is the Tokyo Summer Olympics!

On July 23rd, the Olympic Opening Ceremonies occurred, marking the beginning of the 2021 Tokyo Summer Olympics. As with most events last year, the coronavirus canceled the 2020 Summer Olympics adding another year of training. The global shutdowns forced the competitors to train differently, many of the athletes finding unique ways to utilize what was at home. Due to another rise in COVID-19 cases, there will be no spectators at this year's games, and the athletes will place their medals on themselves. All athletes will also be required to wear face masks at all times except for competition.

These Olympic games are also historic because of the addition of four new sports: skateboarding, surfing, sport climbing, and karate. There are also two returning sports, baseball and softball, which have not been played at the Olympics since 2008. You can explore more about the new sports and keep up to date with the medal winners of each event on the Olympic website.

This week to celebrate the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, can you create any fun projects related to your favorite sport/event? Maybe you want to try to code an Olympic medal tracker in Scratch!
