Code Savvy Connections

Updated: Nov 18, 2020

Our newsletters highlight a variety of people, organizations, and resources that are doing work to broaden participation and expand equitable and engaging computer science and STEM opportunities. We are honored to work in this space along with so many talented and passionate individuals and want to help bring attention to their work.

This Week’s Spotlight: Give to the Max Day

Code Savvy launched our Give to the Max 2020 fundraising campaign and we need your help! For this campaign, a generous anonymous donor has offered to 100% match every donation up to a total of $10,000. That means every dollar you give us, means two more dollars we can use to empower students and educators with the knowledge and skills to create with technology, and break down the racial, gender, and economic barriers that make it harder for some kids to access computer science education than others.

At a time when “distance” is a necessity, the role that technology serves in bringing us together has never been more essential. There is no better time than now to encourage diversity of thought, innovation, technology use, and collaboration. Across the state, and around the world, kids are turning to computers for learning, community, and entertainment. At Code Savvy, we have been hard at work moving our award winning programs into an online setting, so that kids can learn, thrive, connect, and work together to address their needs and the needs in their communities. We have accomplished so much this year, and have big plans going forward, but we need your help. Your generous donation can make a difference for kids across Minnesota by helping us support Minnesota educators, and open the doors of computer science to more kids, especially those who are traditionally underrepresented.

Along with your donation, we hope you can help us invite more people to learn about and support our work. Code Savvy has a great story to tell and you can be a key part of making sure more people hear that story.

From now until Nov 19th, we will be using social media to tell our story and encourage people to financially support us through our page at the GiveMN site. That’s where you come in! Here are ways you can help!

Spread the Word: Follow us on Social Media, and share our posts! (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn). The more you share/forward/retweet what we send to your own networks, the more people we can get excited about our work and how to support it.

Share your Story: Use your own social media to tell people why YOU support Code Savvy. Write a post on any platform that includes the link to our fundraising page. Don’t forget to use #codesavvy #giveathomeMN #mncodes on twitter, or tag codesavvy on Facebook when you post.

Expand our Reach: Help us connect to new people, by encouraging them to follow/like our accounts.

Host a Code Savvy Give to the Max 2020 Fundraiser of your own: This is a simple, but powerful way to let people know why you support Code Savvy, and why they should as well. Details can be found on our Give MN page.

Thank you in advance for any support you can offer.

This Week's Project Inspiration Theme: World Science Day for Peace and Development

November 10th is World Science Day for Peace and Development!

World Science Day for Peace and Development is a day to acknowledge the importance science has on our society. The aim is to inform the public about new scientific discoveries and to keep our planet sustainable. Try using this Scratch tutorial to create a DIY tin can flower pots, then try creating a tutorial for your own sustainable project. Remember, this is just a suggestion; use your creative genius to create a personalized project!

We hope you create a CS project in honor of World Science Day for Peace and Development! If you do, please share it with us.

Share Your CS to Go Projects!

How to Share: We invite CS to Go with Code Savvy participants to consider sharing your projects publicly with the Code Savvy and greater #MNCodes community via video with Flipgrid. We can’t wait to see what you create! Please be sure to follow online safety guidelines and get adult permission before sharing. You can find our Privacy Policy here.
