Code Savvy Connections

Updated: Nov 11

Our newsletters highlight a variety of people, organizations, and resources that are doing work to broaden participation and expand equitable and engaging computer science and STEM opportunities. We are honored to work in this space along with so many talented and passionate individuals and want to help bring attention to their work.

This Week’s Spotlight: MNCodes Virtual Summit

On Saturday, November 14th Code Savvy will be hosting our MNCodes Educator Virtual Summit. Educators from MN and beyond will join us for a day of virtual sessions that explore ways to expand equitable and engaging computer science learning opportunities to all students, with a focus on integrating computer science and computational thinking into a variety of K-12 curricular areas and learning formats.

There will be sessions covering topics such as CS Ed in HS, Inclusion in Tech, CS as a Creative Practice and fun interactive sessions about Python, Raspberry Pi, Micro:bit and many more! And we are really excited to welcome Nancy Lyons, CEO of Clockwork, as our keynote speaker! You can read more about her in this past Spotlight.

You DO NOT want to miss this!!

Tickets are $50 but, you can attend for FREE if you become a member of the Computer Science Teachers Association (CSTA).

Follow these steps to attend the summit for free:

  1. Join CSTA (free membership) - CSTA allows CS teachers to connect to their local and national community and receive key updates from CSTA.

  2. Join CSTA MN (free membership) - The CSTA MN chapter was built to connect computer science teachers, provide professional development, and connect local voices to the national computer science education community. You will receive an email from CSTA-MN with a special link to register.

The summit is just 2 weeks away so be sure to register today! Sessions will be recorded so you will be able to access them at a later time if you’re unable to attend on 11/14.

This Week's Project Inspiration Theme: Native American Heritage Month

November is Native American Heritage Month!

This month we want to honor and celebrate the culture, traditions and history of the Native American communities and acknowledge their countless contributions, especially within Minnesota. We also aim to learn and educate ourselves on the challenges Native American communities have and still face today. The library of congress and other institutions have created a website with many great resources to learn and celebrate this month, check it out here and check out the MN History Center for more resources here. Try using this app inventor tutorial to take what you have learned and create your own encyclopedia. Remember, this is just a suggestion; use your creative genius to create a personalized project!

We hope you create a CS project in honor of Native American Heritage Month! If you do, please share it with us.
